What You Should (and Shouldn't) Wear for Your Headshot Portrait Session

Your headshot reflects you as a business professional. It sets the tone for many of your interactions with clients, colleagues, and the general public. If it sounds like there is a lot at stake all in one photo, there is! Luckily, your headshot session is nothing to be scared of. Below we will talk about the biggest question asked before a session: What should (and shouldn't) I wear for my headshot portrait sessions?

The Do's

Headshot, corporate photos, and personal branding photography for doctors, therapists, hair stylists, business owners, authors, and realtors in Harrisburg, Hershey, Lancaster, and Pittsburg.

Before we go over the things you shouldn't wear, let's go over the things you should. There are a few rules that if you follow, you will be golden.

#1 Wear colors that suit your hair and complexion

Colors that are rich and bold photograph well on camera, so if they suit your complexion, a rich eggplant or deep navy blue can be a fantastic choice. If dark colors tend to wash your complexion out, then opt for lighter shades that create a warm glow. When you feel in-between on a few different colors, bring them with you to your session! Your photographer will be happy to help you choose the one that suits you best.

#2 Layers are your friend

When you layer your clothing, you can create a slimming, versatile and stylish look. This can be done with blazers, cardigans, jewelry, scarves, or even pocket squares. You do want to follow this rule in moderation. There is always too much of a good thing. If you are wearing a cardigan, a scarf, and a chunky necklace, it may appear clunky and unflattering.

#3 Pick soft materials & well-fitting clothing

Many people do not feel comfortable in front of a camera. Choosing an outfit that you think looks professional but makes you uncomfortable is likely to show in your photos. Think of this like Goldilocks & the Three Bears. You want an outfit that is not too tight, not too loose, but just right. Soft materials that feel good on your skin and clothing that make you feel professional and at ease will help create a great photo.

The Dont's

People make a few mistakes when planning the outfit they will wear for their professional portraits or corporate photography. Here are three easy ones to avoid.

#1 Avoid logos or images

Your headshot is meant to represent your company or your brand, not someone else's. Wearing logos or images also takes the viewer's eyes away from your face. That is the opposite of the goal of your headshot.

#2 Stay away from patterned clothing

Headshot, corporate photos, and personal branding photography for doctors, therapists, hair stylists, business owners, authors, and realtors in Harrisburg, Hershey, Lancaster, and Pittsburg.

Yes, we know that patterns may express your quirky personality, but your professional headshot is not the time to be quirky. If you want to wear a pattern, try something small and discreet, like a cami under a blazer or a patterned pocket square in a suit jacket. Ties do not count in this scenario. In a professional headshot, they should be solid-colored.

#3 Don't wear neon colors

Fluorescent colors reflect light back into your face. So neon pink will have you glowing slightly pink. The same can be said for neon green or yellow. Bright colors have a place in your wardrobe, just not in your headshot.

At Kat Squibb Portraits, I understand that headshots can be something many people dread, thinking it will be awkward and uncomfortable. But I promise that I will make you feel at ease and you will find yourself feeling relaxed and having fun!
